A-24 Sleuth by Rob-Caswell A-24 Sleuth by Rob-Caswell
HOLY CRAP - it's like Christmas and Vilardi Claus has left me a bunch of presents?!?!? My old buddy, Mike Vilardi (aka caesar120) [link] was accidentally mailed my art on return from West End Games back in the early 90's. He only now mailed it back to me and I'm stunned. First, I don't really remember doing these, and second... wow, they're tight and well-drawn! Hard to believe I had these skills! ;p It's like seeing many of these pieces for the first time!

The whole batch was from West End's Star Wars RPG. I've long forgotten the details on the subject, but this seems to be a Rebel ship - the A-24 Sleuth, my dated notes tell me. I'm also guessing it might be an Incom manufacture? At any rate, it's my design from long ago (in a studio far, far away...), executed with ink on tone board.

FUN!

I loved that game. I loved the ship art and I loved the stats and write-ups. WEG Star Wars has been a huge influence on me. I still have most of the books and I still sometimes just read Pirates and Privateers and Stock Freighters (the two big ship books) just for the sake of reading them and getting inspired.

Very cool! As I've said to others it's really gratifying to hear that these old pics got stuck in people's brains. Some of my ships, like the Wild Karrde, became major players, but ships like the A-24 largely are remembered by only one or two appearances. I'm flattered to be part of your "inspiration library" :D

Cool stuff, like those hand-me-down X-wing laser cannons! Feels similar to ye olde Traveller designs as well...

Oh man, I remember seeing this in the WEG books and wanting one as a pilot. Can't remember why I didn't get one, but might have been a price/cargo ratio issue.

Going through your gallery is such a blast from the past! :D I remember this little ship and thinking it was a really cool design. In the RPG, we usually ended up flying freighters (because, let's face it, Han Solo made it look so damn cool), but I always wanted to try this little baby out. :D

BTW, some fans have gone to the trouble of drawing up a rather detailed set of deckplans for this ship: [link]

Thought you might like to see that. ;)

Ha, cool! I'd seen that sometime in the past, but it's cool to look at again... and flattering to be so inspiring! I think they only thing that didn't fit in with my vision is the "flat bottom". I kinda thought of this as "wasp-waisted" from top and side.

Thanks! :D

Heh, that's probably WEG's fault for not requesting more images at different angles for this ship. ;)

You also did artwork for WEG? Man, you are a Legend of the Golden Age of RPGs! If someday someone opens a museum of RPG History your artwork must have its own wing!
By the way, the A-24 looks great!

Thanks for the supportive words! However I suspect that museum is not short in coming... ;p
A lot of fun memories, though.

Three absolutely brilliant works, I really like the lines on this beauty, far more gorgeous than the more blocky stuff usually seen in SW :D

Thanks! I tried to evoke something of a lineage with the X-Wing design in some areas, but the front end is fairly unique for the SW 'verse.

Pretty much withered and died. As for favorites, I'm a big fan of the new Star Wars: X-Wing Miniatures game. I haven't actually done a lot of RPGs recently.
