Cookie in the Rings by Rob-Caswell Cookie in the Rings by Rob-Caswell
This is a just completed commission based on story background by John Lester of Starship Modeler [link] . His adventures focus around the the colony transport ship, the James Cook (aka "Cookie"). The ship, about a mile wide sphere, is FTL capable and covered almost completely in a fine outer layer of regolith and ice. Two giant counter-rotating centrifuges spin around the central axis. Here one of Cookie's transports approaches the hanger bay (and yes, the hanger bay IS huge - big enough to pass a 747) as Cookie hides in the Maxwell Gap of Saturn's rings.

As my 3D modeling skills are almost non-existent, I used some basic techniques to make these vehicles. Cookie almost entirely a sphere sculpted with bump, displacement, and texture maps. The transport is a crazy kitbash of geometry and textures from other artists, but employed to meet Lester's design spec (he described the transports largely as shipping containers with rocket motors). Some of you may have fun playing "name that part"... almost like picking out the Tamiya tank bits on the Millennium Falcon :D

Rendered is DS3, postworked in Photoshop. Cookie and all it's relevant details are copyright John Lester.

Reading the description, this reminds me of an Alistair Reynold's Light Hugger!

Must admit - I love the originality of this overall piece!!

Superb!!

A variety of Alistair Reynolds early works; try Redemption Ark, that explains them the best; he is rather vague on the technology mind...

This one is quite well-done. The highlighted hangar area of the Cookie is a real touch of class, and an eye-catcher. The ship is well rendered and effective. Great work with the background, too.

Thanks, bud. A lot more time than usual went into this one. But that's part for the course when I take on a commission ;)

Thanks. I'm not sure it came out 100% what I wanted, but it's got it's own merits that keep me going back and looking at it.

Or are you talking about the limb of Saturn's atmosphere?

What amazes me. is your ability to take a very basic design with few frills and the grace of an appartment block with engines attached and make it looks absolultly stunning...... Bravo.

Hey, thanks pal! As one who doesn't have any real modeling skills, I just have to try and be as resourceful as I can. I'm tickled that you like the results! :D

oooohhh....
you started modelling! :)
good! :)
And I really like what you did so far!
That sphere's surface is just totally cool!
And the transporter looks like a transporter is supposed to look: Squared, practical, good :)
And those sweet little effects at its engines (steering nozzles?) are great!

Well it's not really "modeling" as much as it is cleverly stretching my meager skill set to the limit :D The closest this gets to "modeling" is creative disassembling of existing meshes using PoseRay and creating a sphere primitive. But hey... I'm nothing if not creatively resourceful! ;)
Thanks, dear - glad this one connects with ya!!! :squee:

interesting,
such a colony ship would not need FtL to have adventures, but it helps.
I could imagine robots assisting the crew tend to the DNA arc.
Test tubes holding millions of genetic samples
of almost every single life form from the earth, waiting for they day...
they can be thawed, run through the bio-printer, and released,
on a new home world, a new "earth".
