Fusion by Rob-Caswell Fusion by Rob-Caswell
A Traveller scene. A disabled Type-A Free Trader finds a way to fuse its systems to an ancient, derelict alien starship in order to limp its way back into the space lanes, where its eventually encountered by a Patrol Cruiser.
Done around 1990 as a Traveller magazine illustration. I forget who the adventure story author on this one was (any help out there?).

Great work, it always fascinates me to see what little amount of contours and other lines some people need to perfectly define shapes!

I think that's the secret of SUCCESSFUL commercial illustration: "economy of line". It was my Holy Grail.... remaining at large even today ;)

I wish I could do comics with this quality. Alas, I was never fast enough... unless I wanted to just make the single Great American Comic Book in my life ;)

Actually this image was published with the Megatraveller Adventure Mistaken Identity, on page 14 of Travellers' Digest Number 15. Second adventure in a series of 4.

An excellent piece to be sure, but that said it is almost assuredly the first time I've seen this one... lends to the probability that it comes from Challenge since I have no more than a dozen of those laying around in my 'once upon a time' boxes. I'd have recalled the art and the story if I'd seen it before.

Good eye on spotting the imperial sunburst though, probably makes it a post 'Virus' story/adventure which may help in identifying the thing.

Hm. Yeah. The starburst. Maybe it wasn't an alien ship afterall, just a very old Imperial wreck? The details are lost in the clouds of time. But I CAN say that this was before the silly virus thing. I didn't do any work in that era (error) of the game.

I never could reconcile the whole virus thing myself... so glad to hear that. Given an 100 years history it could indeed have been simply an old wreck. The Kinunir stories were built on such and it wasn't exactly ancient history at the time so a truly ancient ship would have been almost alien in design.

Huge, no real issue with the civil war but the virus was insane. Trade in the space opera for something severely dystopian... based on something that wasn't really going to work for anything aside from an adventure or three at best. Star Vikings my @$$... and to make it worse the survivors had at some point assumed things would be ok if they sent out unarmed and unprotected ships to the wild to explore and... yeahno.

Yup - a pretty desperate attempt to wring more sales out of a concept they saw as stagnant.

An ancient, derelict alien ship... sporting an Imperial sunburst logo.

Probably from one of the Megatraveller Digests, but they're all in a box somewhere, s no answers tonight. Or this week, for that matter.

Quite likely. It's one of the artwork I photocopied to collect into a "what these things look like" file. But the old Challenges are in the same box as the MTDs, so subject to the same limitations on checking.

The article was in Traveller's Digest No. 15. It was titled Mistaken Identity and was written by William W. Conners.

As it happens, I had an article in that issue as well on Nuclear Radiation.

Possibly the fact that I live in Georgia now, where I lived in Virginia and South Carolina when I was working with DGP. Add Washington to that when I was working with GDW until they shut their doors.
