Imperial Walkies! by Rob-Caswell Imperial Walkies! by Rob-Caswell
Traveller joyfully grabbed influences from across the SF genre and Star Wars & anime were not immune. This post is by request for Colourbrand. Traveller didn't have many walkers (in fact this may have been about the only one, back when I was working on the property). This one is from Digest Group's "101 Vehicles". I forget the description, but it might have been for a local militia, so not a true "Imperial walker". FYI, the original drawing is quite small...4.25" from sole to antenna tip. So what you're seeing here is quite a blown up image.

"Traveller" is a trademark of Far Future Enterprises.

Actually, the vehicle is a Siega Class Strider, and it is TL - 12. It is vehicle #16 in Digest Group Publications's "101 Vehicles. It was published in 1988. The Dynchia are first mentioned in the Game Designer's Workshop publication, "The Journal of the Traveller's Aid Society, Issue # 24.

Well I can tell you that the illustration, as designed, was a Dynchia class. It probably got changed between assignment and publication. That happened LOTS. Between the time the art spec is made and the draft is called final, designers are constantly tweaking. I probably saw this most with 2300 A.D.

Given the man-sized silhouette that must be one cramped ride.

Either that or some serious miniaturization on the guts.
Plus it's not really made for "plus-sized warriors" ;)

Maybe the silhouette is of a Dynchia man, so a bit taller than the average humaniti? :-)

Pretty cool walker design! :D As you can probably tell by my love of the AT-PT, I have a real soft spot for small, light walkers. The Locust and Flea were my favorite battlemechs from Battletech, and I loved the AMP units from Avatar (all the military hardware from that movie was awesome). I like the blockiness of this design. It's functional and looks like what it's designed to do. :)

Dynchia - Race of humans who developed into carnivores. All tall (2m), with hair as a mane down the back (both sexes), built slim. Very honour-driven society. Dominates the 5 subsector Comitae (with minority pop of Solomani) "trailing of Old Expanses" but not in the Hinterworlds. See JTAS 24 Contact!

Regarding the Dynchia... I've been trying to find info on them, but I have never came across any. Apart from the GURPS stuff in Humaniti which I don't really trust. :)
Could you (or anyone) point me in the right direction?
There is another Dynchia vehicle in 101 Vehicles if I remember correctly but that's all I've found...

That looks like it's based on the Jenner scout mech from Mechwarrior.

Hm. Never heard of it (the Jenner) and not sure when it was created? In the beginning BattleTech was just ripping off anime designs with little modification, but when I Google the Jenner it looks like it was probably one of the later, more original designs. Anyway, best as I can remember when I designed this (circa '88) I was mainly after a cross between a Star Wars AT-ST and Ostall from Crusher Joe (which I think BattleTech pirated, at one point). The only mech RPG that had my attention then was R.Tal's "Mekton".

It didn't pirate any of the designs they just inspired the Battletech 'Mech designs, and the Jenner is a 25 ton Scout Mech from Mechwarrior 2: Mercenaries and Mechwarrior Online.

Loved 101 Vehicles, and so great to see a big picture of the 'Siega' strider (not walker, please!) after all these years.

Trust me - it was a "walker" before it was a "strider' ;)

In 101 Vehicles, it was the Seiga-class Strider used by the Dynchia (a minor human race in the game). I have the book.

Rob, I've always loved your illustration - you and a couple of others (including Sabakakrazny) defined the Traveller universe from a visual perspective for me and my friends, those many years ago :)

...and 2300AD, and added to Star Wars through the RPG.

Yeah, it's funny how text always seems to get messed around with until the last minute.

I'm tickled that my game art made such an impact! Those were fun days, working with Bryan, Tom, and the crews at DGP and GDW. :D
