Thermal Stasis

The Ranger class scout, Darwin, stumbles across a VERY ancient cometary nucleus, adrift in the interstellar void. While not unheard of, this one is curious as its mass seems far too high for its dimensions and there seems to be a weak magnetic field surrounding the object. After hanging back, bombarding the object with sensor sweeps, and sending a probe for a close fly-by, the Darwin launches the Hammurabi shuttlecraft for a closer visual inspection with an EVA option if warranted. Three probes maintain station keeping during the mission to provide a full inspection from all angles.

Once clear of the Darwin, the shuttlecraft clicks on its spots to illuminate the surface. At that exact moment, the magnetic field vanishes and the mass of the object suddenly drops....
