What's the rationale behind 4 nacelles? Constitution class masses more and gets by with only two, and (I thought) were some of the fastest ships in the fleet. This has got to be an expensive and complicated ship to fuel & operate, so there's definitely a reason. Just... what?
Well not having designed it I can't tell ya about the four nacelle thing, but they clearly laid down a precedent (for better or worse) with the Stargazer in TNG. And why three with the dreadnaught? Or one with the Scout/Destroyers? I loved the Tech Manual when it came out, but it really opened a pandora's box of ship design
whoohooo...four warp nacelles! how fast is it on the quarter mile? (or are they rather racing the "quarter light-year"?) anyway..I'm sure it could overtake itself when in full speed! And these nice torpedoes are good against any roadblocks! Could I have the keys for a test drive, please? I will have been back 30 minutes ago, promised!
