This week is harboring all kinds of of juicy sci-fi delights - at least by my measure of what constitutes "juicy sci-fi". And refreshingly none of them have to do with big Hollywood blockbusters (tm)(R)(c). First I'll start with Trek. More specifically a great dose of that "Gimme the Olde Thyme Trek". The fan production, "Star Trek Continues" www.startrekcontinues.com/ , recently released their first full episode. If I'd just looked at the episode synopsis, I would have yawned (a sequel to "Who Mourns for Adonis?"... did we really need that?), but they really made lemonade from lemons on this. The show is exceptionally well-written, interwoven with drama, humor, and wraps up in a very refreshingly Roddenberry style. But wait, potenial Ginsu buyer, there's MORE!

STAR WHAT??? by sparkyHERO

The production has all kinds of interesting cast and cameos. Regulars include Grant Imahara ("Mythbusters") as Sulu and Chris Doohan (the product of James Doohan's wild oats...) as Scotty. Honestly, name aside, Chris Doohan's Scotty totally sells you on the character. It can be argued he's better at the role than his Dad was. On the cameo side, Jamie Bamber (BSG) drops in and dies as red shirt, Marina Sirtis provides the computer voice, and Doug Drexler sticks his mug on the screen.

And my final endorsement of the effirt, but hardly least important, is the production values. The aim to make it feel like a season four video of the period and succeed spectacularly, even mimicking run time and commercial breaks. The CG effects don't scream "high tech wonder", they just try to evoke the better FX of the period. So if you're a TOS fan (as opposed to someone who will just pursues anything with the Trek name attached), indulge and enjoy! www.startrekcontinues.com/epis…

OK, next up - the newest batch of "Space Battleship Yamato 2199" episodes (15-18) just rolled out on the Interweb. Personally I feel this may be the coolest batch of four to date in the 26 episode series. It sorta has its own little arc story and each episode is vital - no filler here. It answers many questions that have been building, and in quite satisfying ways. I won't say much more as I thoroughly raved the hell out of this series in a previous blog arcas-art.deviantart.com/art/A… . But suffice to say, they only improve on the fine standards they've already set. You can try these sites to get the full series feeds for free:

Also just released is the Japanese trailer for episodes 19-22. Clearly it's crunch time for the astrofleets: www.youtube.com/watch?v=r8N1pq…

And finally we switch gears to the literary side with the release of the third full novel in the James S.A. Corey's  (aka Ty Frank and Daniel Abraham) www.amazon.com/James-S.-A.-Cor… solar-system-based Expanse series, "Abaddon's Gate" www.amazon.com/Abaddons-Gate-T… . This is my favorite currently running series of SF books, delivering a perfect balance of fun space-operatic adventure and real physics. It's proof in the pudding that good science doesn't get in the way of great SF storytelling, it enhances potential drama. Top it all off with well-rounded characters and snappy dialog (fairly Whedonesque) and this series is just a freakin' uber-blast! IO9  recently nominated the series as one of the literary SF creations that's more action packed than the current crop of Hollywood blockbusters (tm)(R)(c) io9.com/10-novels-that-are-mor… . So give it a go (new book comes out this Tuesday, June 4) and I suspect you'll find yourself similarly addicted in no time.

'K. That's it for the nerdgasm.... maybe. Still, here's some inspiring stuff from right here at DA that you might have missed. Share the luv and click the thumbnails below to experience their full glory!

Finally got subtitled 1080p copies of Yamato 2199 eps 19-22. Bit of a mixed bag - character animation in the latter two eps seemed a bit sketchy, and I think the whole "Captain's Log" segment could easily have filled another episode (when did Admiral Ditz get arrested?? I don't remember that...) Run-up to the big battle in the Rainbow Nebula and all the Gamilas politics/Iscandaran religion stuff was great though!

Overall I found this chapter (19-22) to be weaker than the one before it, but I'm sure I've just been spoiled rotten by what's come before. This show quickly sent the bar up MANY notches to a high standard. Did you read the update this weekend on Cosmo DNA?

Just took a look at it. I hate the fact that it was rushed, and yes, character animation did suffer in 22. Hopefully it won't be so noticeable going forward!

Still no word on a second series, as far as I know…

In case you haven't yet seen this: www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/…

No subtitles, but it's pretty clear they've deviated pretty dramatically from the original climax of the first series. Can't wait to see how this all gets wrapped up - and still hoping for a series 2 announcement sometime soon…

Oh MAN - thanks for the heads up!!! Yup, lotsa new angles here.... and if the remake has taught us anything, it's that it's best not get Okita pissed.

Their full-bore landfall on the planet was great, as was the "dogfight" with huge starships in a Gamilas city. I figured that thing Talon was sent to man would come into play. Also, the scene with Starsha was... "intriguing"!

I'm sure the second series is gonna get green lit... but I also think these guys have earned themselves a breather.

If there is a series 2, will be really interested to see which of the new characters will continue. Seems unlikely Niimi would get reassigned to the ship considering her misguided mutiny attempt. Yamamoto is certainly a fan favorite and there's more they can do with her character. Misaki - no idea; seems she was there mostly to channel Yurisha. And Melda Ditz? I can't see her staying with the ship, but they could do a lot with her during the series 2 subplot about Desslar's dealings with the Gatlantis and his eventual "redemption".

Well we'll have to see who survives THIS season, first. I wonder what episode Okita will buy it in?

I suspect it will be the last episode, as before. The Moses-like touch of him making it back to SEE Earth one last time was emotionally powerful in the original, so I think it's a no-brainer to keep that. I wouldn't be surprised if Niimi goes down in a "heroic redemption" moment sometime in the last 8 eps. Of course, they could always have her transferred to Earth after the return, ready to cause some conflict with Sanada or the ship in general at some point in the future.

One thing about 2199 that has REALLY impressed me is that they managed to introduce a slew of new characters on the ship, and on the Gamilan side, and pretty much managed to make them all real characters and not cyphers, and each of them has gotten one or more real development moments. AND they did so without diminishing the original main characters much. They've toned down the "Kodai growing up" theme and the Kodai/Yuki romance in the first series, but not eliminated either. Okita isn't spending the last third of the series in bed, which gives us more of a reason to understand the quality captain Kodai eventually feels he has to live up to. And the machinations of the Gamilans is often as interesting as what's going on aboard the Yamato itself.

Seriously, this is a Battlestar Galactica-level/quality reboot. Took a show which was fun as a teenager and retained a campy/guilty pleasure quality to it, and made it a real, top-drawer space adventure…

Yeah, it's BSG level.... but better. Really. This has become my gold standard of rebootology.

Hmmm... I might still give the title to BSG (with 2199 a close 2nd) for a few reasons. BSG aimed higher than 2199 has (so far) in trying to create a much deeper canvas upon which to tell their story. Sticking to just BSG itself and its two extra movies (not counting Caprica and Blood & Steel) you learn a GREAT deal about the colonies pre-catastrophe - social, political, seedy underbelly, even the sports teams. Points get docked for some of it making zero sense (why the vehicles and fashions are essentially 21st Century Earth, etc.) but you get the idea - the Colonies pre-catastrophe are a real place the destruction of which hits you. Plus there's the history of the original war, the false trail towards original Earth, the "mythology" of the Cylons and their attitudes, etc. Again, sometimes the dots don't connect well, but Moore aimed really high and hit more than he missed, especially in the first 2 1/2 seasons. And of course, BSG ran for four years plus some extra materials, so there is a lot more to judge from (so far).

2199 has done SOME of that, but to a much lesser extent - so far. We see that Mars used to be inhabited, and that there was some conflict between Earth and Mars before the Gamilans appeared. Yamamoto is proxy for that, but aside from her red eyes, not a lot has been made of it. We see a small bit in the early episodes about the UN and the regional governments of Earth. We see a LOT of the Gamilans and their society, or at least the highest echelons of it, which is a big plus, as well as a good bit more about Iscandar and Starsha's motives than we ever saw before. And it's a VASTLY improved space adventure setting than ever it was in the 1970s. There are some areas, though, where 2199 (or 2201...) really need to reach farther to make the show tops for me. Use some of the time in S2 to showcase the Earth of the early 23rd season better - give Earth politics the same focus as Gamilan's had. Flesh out some of the pre-2199 solar system history - are Martians treated differently? And the biggest unanswered question from all the original Yamato series: why do all the aliens look human only with different colored skin? Maybe connect it to the builders of the warp gates?

2199 has been a HUGE success and has made it so that I can recommend the show to non-anime geek fans as serious space adventure TV. It may yet take the crown of best reboot, once we see how it progresses into future seasons (if they happen). God I hope so, because it is SO much fun now!
