I’m not sure how many of you are psyched for the release of the “Guardians of the Galaxy” movie, but I am. A year ago that statement would have surprised me. In part because I never had any real draw towards the comic. But after seeing all the great trailers and clips out there, I’m hooked. At least hooked enough to dare to have some good expectations. It looks like good, pure fun!

Part of what appeals to me is having some rock ‘em, sock ‘em space adventure that doesn’t take itself too deadly serious. My younger self liked that stuff, but now I find I’m drawn to more works that let you laugh once in a while. Or a lot. I’m not talking about space comedies, like “Spaceballs”, but dramatic shows with a well written humor subtext like “Firefly”. They remind me a bit of the crazy space adventures that I shared with my buddy Bill ( abakon.deviantart.com/ ) in my old RPG days.

My intolerance for ponderous, deadly serious SF is what turned me away from the series “Enterprise”. The scripts felt so dreadfully self-important and dry … not to mention sloppily written with plot holes the size of 18-wheelers. Inversely it’s why I so enjoyed books like Andy Weir’s “The Martian” (now being made into a film by Ridley Scott) and James S.A. Corey’s “Expanse” series (being developed as a series for SyFy). Sure, the basic plots are serious business, but the characters are willing to laugh at themselves and their challenges, as we all do in real life. Well… at least those of us that are fun at parties. And I'm talking about well-written, clever humor, not the forced belly laugh of a Jaj-Jar Binks fart joke written to amuse six year olds.

Another element that appeals to me about “Guardians…” is the 70’s SF production design. As you can probably tell I have a real soft pot for that look so they’re hittin’ my sweet spot. I’m sure the movie won’t be everyone’s cup of tea, but it sure looks like its gonna make my palate happy!

Two days ‘til I’m off to Shore Leave ( www.shore-leave.com/ ) in Baltimore, then it’s back home to see “the movie” (!!!) and to start my next cover assignment – a piece for a Kindle release of an Allen Steele novella. Wow, a twofer! Thanks, Rob!

Well, it looks like you've convinced me; tomorrow is my day off, and I just may find myself in the theater - all your fault ;).

Hmm, I did miss opening day. Yet still had some misgivings ...about that scene where the lead mentions to a bad guy that he was once "STARLORD"... and the bad guy doesn't recognize the name not at all.
"Starlord" I remember was a great early 70's Marvel sci-fi fantasy space avenger character, in my book. Wasn't too happy they belittled their own old character.
But maybe it's as you said. I need to kick back and laugh at sci-fi some and not take it so seriously.

Thanks for adding me to the collection.
Saw Guardians of the Galaxy last night. Got sucked into it right from the off and loved it. I sat mostly with a smile and laugh on my face and left the cinema with that feel good vibe I realised I havn't had from a movie in a while.

I'm stoked about it for the exact same reason!
And ditto on the Martian and the Expanse, obviously :)

Also Snowpiercer, aaah! My favorite movie of the year so far. Grim and serious in parts, hilarious and totally bonkers in others.

Oh lord, I went on a date the other night and this nice nerdy guy asked me in all earnestness if I'd "ever heard of this show called Firefly."

I'm really looking forward to it a lot more than I expected, as well. It's not just another Marvel comic movie but a wild and crazy space opera that just happens to involve some comic book characters and plots. I'm right there with you on the issue of Pretentiously Serious Sci Fi. You can have very important themes and still have fun doing it, which a lot of other books, movies and TV shows seem to forget.

We were watching the Avengers on TV and the end of the credits had the ad for Guardians and my mum just went "I want to see that"

I like all the pretty colors. So many movies and even TV series these days remove all the color. Every shot I have seen so far for Dawn of Justice seems monochromatic at best. GotG looks colorful and fun.

As someone that had followed the comic "back in the day", I was looking forward to seeing this when I first heard rumors that a movie adaption was in the works.  Then I saw the first trailer...  *blink blink*  What the frack has Marvel Comics been doing since I stopped buying their books back in the early '90's???  This is not what I remember the Guardians to be. O.O  I am so confused...

DId like Firefly. Think it and Babylon 5 were the last sci fi shows Iv really enjoyed. Mostly for the 'human' side they showed. Wash playing with the dinosaurs. Commander Sinclair and Garabaldi playing the breakfast prank on Ivanova. It was those moments that made the shows warmer and more believable than others.

I'm really looking forward to Guardians as well. So far it looks like it'll just be a really fun adventure/sci-fi movie, and I have the feeling it might turn out to be the Star Wars of this current generation. While it is set within the Marvel Universe it's a fresh set of characters that are fairly unknown, so it's not going to feel like another Superman reboot or whatever. Granted, I suppose Star Wars ep. VII might take everyone by surprise, but I'm seriously sitting on my expectations of that considering the prequels, although I've been happy with the direction that film has been going in the glimpses we've been given of the sets and design elements.

Even though I grew up with Star Wars, I look at the outlook for Ep. VII and just feel like "been there, done that". The romance is over.

I'm with you - I'm coming from the Land of "Meh" (never read the comic, either) to the "Wow - I'm out there on the first weekend!"  For pretty much the same reason - it looks like big fun!
