I wish my life could be all musings of science fiction possibilities, but life has a texture to it – a passage we all have to travel. My passage has hit one of those sad corners – one where a good friend and neighbor has just died from complications stemming from bladder cancer.

We usually go through life being shocked by death, but it's one of the few guarantees that being alive offers. As the Flaming Lips song goes, "Do you realize that everyone you know some day will die?"  But they go on….

"And instead of saying all of your goodbyes, let them know
You realize that life goes fast
It's hard to make the good things last
You realize the sun doesn't go down
It's just an illusion caused by the world spinning round"

It's just a pity that human nature often blinds us to the true value of our friends until they take their exit cues…

Well, on a lighter note I blew through the latest James S.A.Corey book…  (576 pages) in about three sittings. The third book in their Expanse series, the story and writing are still going strong as ever! Space Opera made of pure awesomium! And again the book leaves us with a totally new hand of cards to play in subsequent novels. The series remains my favorite active SF book series and really begs to be a completely awesome HBO SF series!

There are a few shorts stories connected to the series as well. While these haven't been quite as strong as the novels, they still provide some good additional background on Corey's solar-system-spanning future humanity. Some of the short works are stand alone e-books, others are part of anthologies. So far we have:

"The Butcher of Anderson Station" (kindle e-book):…
"The Gods of Risk" (kindle e-book):…
"Drive" (in the anthology "Edge of Infinity"):…
An unnamed story in the "Old Mars" anthology to be released in October:…

OK. You've made it this far through my blog, so you deserve a dessert! ART! With bigness and details only a click away. EAT UP!!!!

Sorry to hear about your friend passing. It's always hard to see those close to us go, but like you said, we are richer for having known them. I agree with you about the Expanse series. "Leviathan Wakes" was one of the best SF novels I've read in a very long time (I say read, more like devoured... couldn't put it down). Just picked u the second book "Caliban's War" and am looking forward to diving into that once I finish with Hugh Howey's "Wool Omnibus".

Well the urge to "devour' the Expanse novels only gets worse with time ;) Glad you're enjoying so far! It's one of those book series that just seems to strike a chord with everyone!

I'm sorry for your loss, but all the same, they never really die as long as we remember them. Plus, that's a beautiful way to remember someone. :)

Sadness is part of what I feel, but another part is gratitude for his friendship and example. The people around us go a long way to making us who we are... and some donate some pretty quality ingredients :D

Sorry to hear you lost a friend . In the future remember to keep him alive in your memories/heart . The older we get the more people we help live on .

Yep. True words. We carry our lost friends and family forward. And personally I enjoy my "duty" of sharing their lives through stories told to friends. I like to celebrate the lives that have touched me :D

Leviathan Wakes, the first book in that Expanse series is only $2.99 as an ebook on Amazon right now. YOINK! Grabbed it, I'm not sure when I'll get around to reading it though. :o
